Emerging Young Leaders (EYL)






This signature program for Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. will impact the lives of 10,000 girls in grades six through eight by exploring the following four AKAdemies: (1) leadership development; (2) civic engagement; (3) enhanced academic preparation; and (4) character building. The EYL Program will help develop the following life-long skills: Advocacy; Leadership; Community Service; Environmental Sustainability; Technology; Financial Literacy; Higher Education; and Non-Traditional Careers for Women. The increasing demands of the twenty-first century mandate our youth to be better leaders at a younger age making smart choices with positive consequences.

The expected results of the EYL Program are to ensure academic excellence while providing
learning that develops skills, supplies meaningful experiences for life-long application, resulting in productive and contributing citizens. Some indicators of program success include, but not limited to:
• Zero Early Teen Pregnancy
• Improved Relationships
• Improved Self-Esteem
• Election to Office
• Recognitions for Excellence
• Global Awareness

Program Criteria
• Open to middle school girls in grades 6, 7 and 8
• Applicant must be enrolled in school
• Applicant must submit a completed counselor/teacher recommendation form
• Applicant must maintain a C+ grade point average, or its equivalent, and must show - marked effort, improvement or success each grading period
• Applicant must submit a typed personal statement (not to exceed 500 words) which articulates why she desires to be in the Emerging Young Leaders Program
• Applicant must agree to follow instructions, cooperate and be well-behaved while participating in
the program
• Applicant must submit a completed parental consent and release form
