The 19th Annual AKA Day at the Capitol

The 19th Annual AKA Day at the Capitol was an action packed two days filled with informative workshops, exposure to State Legislatures, and of course, sisterly bonding. Each year, members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated are encouraged to visit their respective state capitols in order to foster a deeper connection with political leaders and a broader understanding of local and state issues. Members in attendance from Sigma Lambda Omega included Arianne Ousley, Karin Stanford, and Vanessa Hirsi.

This year’s theme was
“Powerful Women, Powerful Voices, Powerful Votes.” In conjunction with this theme, the first power-packed day consisted of sorority member-led “Social Justice and Civil Rights Workshops.” These workshops focused on using our own power as women to effect change and included workshops on successful letter-writing campaigns, a discussion of pending legislation and voting rights, and ACTION items.

The following day Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. members convened in a committee room at the Capitol Building where they were visited by various members of the California State Legislature. In this forum, sorority members and visitors had the opportunity to directly address Senators and Assembly Members with their questions and concerns. Members also had the opportunity to schedule individual constituent meetings with their local Senators and Assembly Members for further discussion. The conference closed with a fabulous luncheon featuring Activist and Executive Director of Justice Teams Network Cat Brooks as the keynote speaker.

“Two highlights,” Sorority member Arianne Ousley stated, “included a tour of the Capitol Building and being personally invited down into the Senate Chamber by Senator Steven Bradford! He even changed the marquee to say, “Welcome to the California State Senate Chamber AKA Sorority, Incorporated”.” Sigma Lambda Omega members also had the incredible opportunity of witnessing Assemblywoman Sydney Kamlager (a member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated) as she was sworn into office.
